Inspired by a rhythm section with two percussionists Stan creates one of his most extrovert solos of the set here. The deceptively simple One Note Samba (apart from the tricky middle-eight) was unusual for a genre characterised by subtle melodies. Triste means Sad and on Samba Triste the principals create a profound feeling of melancholy that never descends into pathos. To be fair to the guitarist his solos elsewhere have a melodic charm perfectly in keeping with the idiom. ![]() Charlie Byrd sounds uncomfortable here but Stan rescues the situation with a brisk, authoritative statement. Composed by Baden Powell and Billy Blanco.Stan Getz - Tenor Sax.Charlie By. On Desafinado the group seem to have decided on a montuno for the blowing choruses instead of using Jobim’s intriguing modulations. I do not own copyright of this song. From the album 'Jazz Samba', released in 1962. Getz would have been familiar with the 1945 Bing Crosby hit Baia, but the rest of this material was quite new to him. Even Coleman Hawkins dipped his toe into the water and when it eventually came to Paul Desmond’s turn in 1964 he wittily decided to call his effort Bossa Antigua or Old Thing. Bossa nova became known as the New Thing and Ted Gioia in his Jazz Standards says “After Getz’s success almost every member of Local 802 jumped on the bossa nova bandwagon”. They were familiar with the samba so that was how the recording was marketed and Jazz Samba eventually reached number 1 on the Billboard pop charts. Producer Creed Taylor apparently decided that “an American audience wouldn’t know what a bossa nova is”. ![]() I did say just 15 days ago that I didn't want to spend $90 just to get free shipping, but I DID take advantage of the Labor Day sale offered by Elusive Disc, so I ended up getting it sooner than I thought I might. This was the album that began the public’s love affair with the seductive rhythms and harmonies of the bossa nova although that term was not mentioned in the original sleeve-note. That doesn't mean that I wasn't curious about this one, I was, after all, satisfied with the earlier Getz/Gilberto. I am one of the fortunate DCC Gold owners, and I must say that I've been enjoying it since its initial release. On a scale of 10 though, I would rate this one a 7.5 for SQ. JAZZ SAMBA 180g Vinyl LP Artist: STAN GETZ & CHARLIE BYRD Format: LP Bar-code: 5060348583325 Cat No: NOTLP33213.99 This ground-breaking record produced by Creed Taylor came about when Charlie Byrd introduced Stan Getz to the Brazilian Rhythm style, having brought the first Bossa Nova records over to America from Brazil. And because I haven't listened to my copy of the standard copy of the disc in the Girl From Ipanema 4-CD set, I cannot say whether you would be better off with the commercial CD or not. Desafinado: Jazz Samba & Big Band Bossa Nova (2 LP ON 1 CD) ( CD, Compilation) Fresh Sound Records. Even the sound stage and image are different when comparing these two, and, yes, the DCC sounds far more like my original LP.ĭon't get me wrong, the SACD will be just fine if you don't have the DCC. The SACD sounds a bit bombastic and overblown while there's an ease to the DCC. Treble? Charlie Byrd's guitar string tone is far more natural sounding on the DCC, and without a trace of digital steeliness that the AP hints at. Pick a sound characteristic: Bass? the DCC is more authoritative, and not flabby like the new SACD. ![]() If you have the DCC, be glad to know that you needn't worry that someone who bought this new release has anything you don't. ![]() In a short sentence, Steve Hoffman's DCC really puts the hurt on this new AP SACD.
